Théo Court is a Spanish-Chilean film director and screenwriter, recognized with the Silver Lion for Best Director in the Orizzonti section of the Venice International Film Festival in 2019, an unprecedented award for Chilean cinema.

Son of the prominent Chilean painter and sculptor Patricio Court del Pedregal, nephew of Chilean filmmakers Juan Carlos Bustamante and Patricio Bustamante, as well as Chilean writer Oscar Bustamante.

He lived in Madrid until the age of 16, when he moved to Chile with his family, with whom he settled in the countryside, in the Maule region, a fact that deeply marked his artistic development. Isolation, loneliness, his family environment and the rural landscape of central Chile in the late 90’s, made him turn to literature, poetry and film.

He studied photography in Madrid, at the EFTI school. He enters the ARCIS University in Santiago where he studies filmmaking and completes his studies at the International School of Film and Television (EICTV) in San Antonio de los Baños (Cuba). He graduated from that school with a major in directing between 2002 and 2004.

His graduation thesis, filmed in Chile, “EL ESPINO” (2004), participated in the 2005 Cannes Cinefondation and in several international festivals. In 2008, he received a Hubert Bals grant to develop the screenplay for his first feature film, “OCASO” (2011). Premieres worldwide at Rotterdam Film Festival and at more than 20 international festivals. His second feature film “WHITE ON WHITE” (2019) premieres at Venice Film Festival 2019 in the Orizzonti section, winning the award for Best Director and the Fipresci award, also participates in more than 70 International Festivals obtaining around 30 awards, among which stand out: Rotterdam Film Festival, Viennale, Goa (India), Gent (Belgium), Busan (Korea), Shanghai (China), Thessaloniki (Greece), Karlovy Vary (Czech Republic) and Gijón (Spain). The film has been commercially distributed in: Spain, Chile, Netherlands, South Korea, Taiwan, Mexico, USA and Uruguay as well as in digital platforms of wide international reach and prestige such as MUBI (USA) and FILMIN (SPAIN). It was also Chile’s candidate for the Oscars for Best International Film.

He is currently developing his long awaited third feature film, “TRES NOCHES NEGRAS“, a rural police fable set in the Chilean countryside.
